Cross profile in beech veneer, 2019
lignum – Institute of Timber Engineering and Wood Technology/Graz University of Technology, holz.bau forschungs gmbh

Bildunterschrift

This slender cross-profile column made of beech veneer is a striking example of the effectiveness of wood as a construction material. The compression-moulded 160 x 160 mm cross-profile made of seven-layer veneer has excellent buckling behaviour and an overall strength and stiffness of about a third of steel columns with the same cross-section. Established in 2014, the research field Lightweight and Hybrid Hardwood Applications (LHHA) develops high-strength lightweight components for the construction and mobility sectors made from less used wood species, according to the principle ‘From sawing to peeling’.
