Liu Xiaodong belongs to the generation of Chinese artists who grew up at a time of rural exodus and explosive growth in the major cities. As a result, these processes of change are often the subject of his work. For his exhibition at the Kunsthaus Graz, Liu spent a month in the Upper Styrian town of Eisenerz in 2012. This old industrial and cultural landscape was, and still is, subject to enormous social changes. His paintings created on site (one of them is in the Neue Galerie Graz collection) and his film reveal his cautious approach to a town that was at first culturally foreign to him.
