Silent University, in Austria from 2012/2013, seit 2012/2013

Bildunterschrift

The Silent University is an autonomous knowledge exchange platform for asylum seekers and migrants initially started in 2012/2013 by the artist Ahmet Öğüt at the Tate in London. The concept has now developed internationally with the aim of creating an open learning space where ‘knowledge’ can grow in ‘non-hierarchical’ participation by coming together in solidarity. Since 2016, the Silent University has also existed within the framework of KUNSTLABOR Graz and has been accompanied by the OPEN DOORS format since 2017. Several times a year, participants are invited to set out their own concerns, share and discuss them, and find ways to initiate or further develop their own goals. This joint study course does not require any papers or money, only personal commitment. In the spirit of solidarity-based ‘education for building a sense of community’, it finds common languages, forms networks and encourages indi-vidual further development – giving rise, among other things, to the Persian-language library KATIB on Strauchergasse.
