Bildunterschrift

From the 1970s on, Lois Weinberger explored the interdependence of nature and society. He worked on a poetic and political network that directs the focus onto marginal zones and calls into question hierar-chies of various kinds. This also includes our attitude to ‘weeds’, which represent outsiderhood in plant communities. The first ‘Wild Cube’ was created in 1991 – others followed in Vienna, Innsbruck, Brussels, Paris, Tokyo and Graz, among other places. Life thrives in enclosed areas, germinating or arising through the flight of seeds or birds – sponta-neous vegetation without human intervention. By consciously leaving things unattended, by not interfering and letting be, by observing and appreciating the free space created, nature can unfold in the urban environment, while the development and transformation of the work can be witnessed. Drawings, texts, photos, models, films and sculptures complement, accompany and expand the works in public space.
