The School for Civic Action is an educational experiment that tests alternative approaches to ‘city-making’. Deploying artistic, urbanistic interventions, the London architecture and art collective public works join with Studio Magic from Graz to directly involve citizens in socially engaged urban development. In an ‘open university’, the appropriation of public spaces beyond consumption is consid-ered in situ, raising the question of what role the main square of a district can play in relation to the main square of the city. The School for Civic Action is staged at the invitation of transparadiso, who are working with artists in districts on the outskirts of Graz to intertwine action and planning according to the method of ‘Direct Urbanism’ developed by them. The drawing is part of the research for PLATZEN – School for Civic Action on the main square of the Andritz district in the summer of 2021.
