Whether it is in food shops or DIY stores, in specialised shops or as give-aways at events – almost everywhere we now find meadow seed packets containing a diverse mix of species. Their contents can vary greatly, however. Since 2007, biologist and farmer Heli Kammerer has been producing valuable seeds on the meadows of his farm on the Leber in Stattegg at the edge of the Schöckl mountain. Meadow types that were once ubiquitous are now considered endangered. On Heli Kammerer’s rough, species-rich fertile meadows and alkaline-rich semi-dry grasslands, species numbers of more than 60 are to be found. The winner of the Meadow Prize 2020 for the most species-rich meadow in Styria (awarded by the Greens of Styria) gathers the valuable seeds with a hand-held brush device and also by hand, meaning that more than half of the occurring species can always be found in his seed (due to the collection method, pieces of leaf and stem are also included).
